CHIP BECK

At the youthful age of 10, Chip Beck’s mother first introduced him to golf by taking him to a junior clinic. Little did she know the impact that day would have on him. After a successful junior career, Chip enrolled at the University of Georgia where he would become one of the most decorated golfers in UGA history. As a three-time first team All-American and five-time tournament winner with more top ten finishes than any other player in the school’s history, Chip Beck decided it was time to test his skills with the best players in the world on the PGA Tour.
Chip had four PGA Tour victories and twenty runner-up finishes during his playing career. He won the Vardon Trophy in 1989 and spent 40 weeks in the top 10 of the World Golf Rankings from 1988 to 1989. Additionally, he was the second player to ever shoot ’59’ in a PGA Tour tournament. Several players have accomplished this feat on the PGA Tour, but only Al Geiberger and David Duval have also reached that magical thirteen under par number. Prior to the Las Vegas Invitational, the Hilton family said anybody who could shoot a 59 would win a million dollars. Despite never having seen the course before, Chip had five pars and 13 birdies (a PGA Tour record for birdies in one round), including a three footer on the 18th hole to shoot a 59. Beck finished tied for third in the tournament, but half of the million dollars he won ended up funding the Chip Beck Scholarship. Since 1991, this scholarship has run in conjunction with the Evans Scholars Foundation with the Western Golf Association and still continues today.

In addition to his PGA Tour accomplishments, Chip Beck is also well known as a three-time Ryder Cup member, especially as a crucial player in the 1993 Ryder Cup, the last time the United States won on European soil. His all-time Ryder Cup record is 6-2-1, with a point percentage of .72. Furthermore, Chip is one of two people to ever have a hole in one on a par four, which he achieved on the 314-yard 9th hole at the 2003 Omaha Classic. Although Chip has never won a major, he was the runner-up in three Majors and one Players Championship. (1986 US Open, 1989 US Open, 1989 Players Championship and 1993 Masters).

To many around the world Chip Beck is simply known as ‘Mr. 59,’ but ask him and he will tell you he is just another guy who loves God, his family, and the game of golf. Chip is currently an ambassador for Arcis Golf and for PitchfixUSA, the company that manufactures the Golf Digest award winning Fusion 2.5 Divot Repair Tool.

Scott Hansen, NFL RedZone

Rick is joined this episode by Scott Hansen, host of the popular NFL RedZone channel each Sunday.

Hansen was in Atlanta for Super Bowl week in Atlanta, hosting the NFL’s 1st and Future event. This is an annual “Shark Tank” like competition where football ideas are brought before a panel of judges and could become an actual product the NFL could use.

In 1993 Hanson landed his first job as an anchor and reporter for NBC affiliate WPBN-TV in Traverse City, Michigan. He then moved to Springfield, Illinois in 1994, sticking with NBC to be a reporter for WICS-TV. Next, Hanson headed south to ABC affiliate WFTS-TV in Tampa, Florida, where he covered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rise under coach Tony Dungy.

Scott then did a two-year stint in 2000 with Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, where he served as an anchor on SportsNite as well as intermission reporter for the Philadelphia Flyers. In 2002, Hanson moved to sister network Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic in Bethesda, Maryland, where he served as a main anchor and reporter. There, Hanson was reunited with his former WFTS-TV colleague Sage Steele, who joined CSN Mid-Atlantic a year earlier (2001).

Leland Melvin, NASA Astronaut, Former NFL Player

Rick is joined on this special episode this week by NASA astronaut, Leland Melvin.

It might seem strange that an astronaut is in Atlanta for the Super Bowl, but he was also a college football star and was drafted into the NFL.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and Florida’s Space Coast are taking football fans on a journey through the galaxy and beyond. Join us for a special meet-and-greet with veteran NASA astronaut Leland Melvin, the only person ever drafted into the NFL to have flown in space, and an exploration of MRVN®, the larger-than-life Mars rover concept vehicle. Other highlights include photo opportunities with a lunar rover, information about NASA “spinoffs” relating to football, and an entertaining display of the differences between playing football on Mars, Moon and Earth.

Leland Melvin is the only person in human history to catch a pass in the National Football League and in space. Though his path from the gridiron to the heavens was riddled with setbacks and injury, Leland persevered to reach the stars. He served as mission specialist for two flights aboard space shuttle Atlantis, working on the International Space Station. The Pro Football Hall of Fame honored his athletic and academic accomplishments by placing his Detroit Lions jersey under glass in Canton, Ohio.

Melvin served on board the Space Shuttle Atlantis as a mission specialist on STS-122, and as mission specialist 1 on STS-129.

As a student athlete, he  was a wide receiver on the University of Richmond football team from 1982–85. Melvin is first on the University of Richmond’s career lists with 198 receptions for 2,669 yards and fourth on Richmond’s career touchdown receptions list with 16. He was an AP honorable mention All-America selection in 1984 and 1985 and second team Apple Academic All-America in 1985.

A team captain during his senior season, Melvin had his best year in 1985, with 65 catches for 956 yards and eight TDs. His top game was in 1984 against James Madison University, when he had 10 catches for 208 yards and one touchdown.

Melvin caught at least one pass in every game he played as a Richmond Spider (39).

He was in the University of Richmond Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee Class of 1996–97 and selected for the All-UR Stadium Team in 2009, which commemorates the greatest Spiders to have played at the stadium in its 81-year history.

Leland talks about the importance of STEAM education and how the younger generation can really do it all- sports and academics. He’s an author, a lecturer, great with both kids and dogs.

Very insightful and one of my favorite guests. Visit: www.lelandmelvin.com.
