LD Morrow, Author, Comedian, Bartender, Storyteller ‘Think Like a Bartender’

Rick is joined this week by L.D. Morrow talking a great new book, Think Like a Bartender: Recipes for Life.

There are sports connections of course as L.D. will explain in this fascinating interview.

Think Like a Bartender: Recipes for Life would be a great addition to a holiday gift guide! Comedian, former bartender, and storyteller L.D. Morrow has written the new book, which shows the amazing parallels between the job skills of a bartender and life skills for everyone. From learning how to cut people off to working through a bad day, Think Like a Bartender encourages people to tap into their inner mixologist and “serve up” their best selves. Think Like a Bartender is set for on November 18 and will available in print, ebook and audiobook on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, and many more booksellers. The book will retail for $11.99 ISBN: 978-0-578-44889-3.

“Think Like a Bartender mixes two parts wisdom and one part comedy for a delicious cerebral cocktail everyone will enjoy!” says Morrow. “Even if you have never had an alcoholic drink, you will giggle your way through this personal, yet amusing perspective on living your best life.”

Have a listen as Rick and L.D. talk about people that spend copious amounts of times at bars and the various roles of the bartender.

Morrow’s career path included bartending while she was in college. She developed a love for the profession and wrote the humorous “self-help” book to show how a bartender’s skills translate to life skills for everyone. The book also serves up some of Morrow’s favorite cocktail recipes at the end of each chapter.

In addition to writing, Morrow is a sought after comedian. She has performed at New York’s famous Caroline’s on Broadway, Broadway Comedy Club and other notable venues. Morrow’s southern charm and quick wit has served her well as host of red carpet events and moderator of panel events around the country. She is also an associate producer for the 2019 short film Burden.

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Morrow holds a Master of Arts in Strategic Communication and Leadership from Seton Hall University, an MBA from the Jones School of Business at Texas Southern University and is a graduate of leading industry programs, CTAM-U at Harvard Business School and the acclaimed Digital Marketing program at Cornell University.

A lover of Tequila and Irish Whiskeys, Morrow can often be found making cocktails for her friends while cracking jokes.

Have a listen to Rick and L.D. and make sure you check out Think Like a Bartender.

Andra Douglas, Author, Artist and Athlete

This is a sports book, but also more than just that.

Rick is joined this week by Andra Douglas, who has a new sports book out!

Black & Blue: Love, Sports and the Art of Empowerment

A native of central Florida and a graduate of Florida State University and Prat tInstitute, Douglas has been a National Champion athlete in rugby and women’s tackle football, a Vice President/Creative Director at Time Warner, the founder of the Fins Up! Foundation for Female Athletes, a non-profit to benefit at-risk teens, (www.womensgridironfoundation.org), the owner of the New York Sharks Women’s Pro Football team for 19 years (www.nysharksfootball.com) and a known artist. She lives with her parrot, ‘Pie’ in New York City where she spends much of her time working from her rooftop studio in Greenwich Village on her mixed-media artwork. (www.andradouglasart.com)

In the Deep South, football is a religion and even as a young girl, Christine dearly loved the game. Her passion to play, not just watch, was apparent. But even by the time she reached her teens, society’s message that women are second-class citizens – and the South’s particular interpretation of that — had seeped in. She chafed at what the South told her she should be – the classic belle, demure, deferential, yielding to men — versus what she knew or dreamed she was capable of being: fearless, inquisitive, strong, accepting life’s every challenge with poise, determined to be a success. ‘Black & Blue’ is the book about what happens during her poignant, often hilarious, sometimes discouraging but ultimately successful and profound journey from her small-town beginnings to New York City, where she moves sight unseen with encouragement from her mother and aunt to attend Pratt Institute and pursue her artistic talents.

It’s a book about coming of age, and the vivid characters who touch Christine along the way, starting with her father, who never had a son and coddled her love for things Southern girls weren’t “supposed” to do, and her grandmother, who knew firsthand how the South could suffocate nonconforming girls and encouraged Christine to be herself with some quietly rebellious (and subversively funny) shows of solidarity, like taking Christine to buy her first football. This book is also a backstage insight into a world few people know much about — the wild west world of women’s pro football, where shysters abounded in the early days of the game and the array of women who play tackle football come to the sport for their own reasons, same as Christine did.In some ways this book is A League of Their Own meets Semi-Tough. When the unexpected dream opportunity to finally play tackle football comes along, Christine purchases the New York franchise in a grass-roots women’s pro league because the team is in danger of folding. The responsibility of owning a sports franchise, however, is overwhelming. Christine’s longtime partner ultimately leaves her and Christine’s family is critical of her devotion to the club. Even the team’s players second-guess her decisions and motives at one point. She is painfully reminded of childhood and retreats inward, leaving her infighting team to fend for itself as she battles some dark questions until something more devastating happens. Sarah, a close friend and popular teammate, is killed in a car accident on Christmas Day. Christine, dogged now by memories of how Sarah had so much she still intended to do, begins a voyage to re-empower herself and regain her lost passion and belief. Along with her surprised players, Christine and the Sharks embark on a rollicking quest for the national title that is ostensibly about football. But it’s a meditation, too, about how being different requires of all of them to examine themselves and choices they’ve made.

John Parisella, Horse Trainer to the Stars with his New Book

Great to be joined by quite an interesting character, horse trainer, John Parisella, talking about his new book. And does he have some stories to tell.

The book is: From the Streets of Brooklyn to Trainer to the Stars: John Parisella’s Lifetime of Celebrity Connections

This is an amazing read!

An accomplished trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses, John Parisella grew up on the streets of post-Depression, post-war Brooklyn. The son of a bookmaker and shylock, he began playing the horses at Aqueduct and Belmont while in high school. He became the protégé of fellow New Yorker and Hall of Fame trainer, John Campo. Parisella ran horses at thirty-eight tracks and half the Thoroughbreds he sent to the post finished in the money. His most famous horse, Simply Majestic, once ran faster than the great Secretariat. That’s only part of the story of the man who went FROM THE STREETS OF BROOKLYN TO TRAINER TO THE STARS.

John Parisella enjoyed over five decades of adventures with the biggest names in sports and entertainment. In the early 1970s he appeared twice on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” and on his second appearance was proclaimed the “Trainer to the Stars” by actor Jack Klugman because, at that time, Parisella was training horses for a stable of movie stars that included Klugman, Caan and Telly Savalas. He went drinking with Mantle; cajoled Steinbrenner into helping Joe Pepitone and lived with James Caan at the height of Caan’s fame; became Pitino’s close friend and was the intermediary with the New York Knicks as he orchestrated Pitino’s move to become head basketball coach at the University of Kentucky; and, as Bethenny Frankel’s stepfather, was the father-figure in the future Reality TV star’s life as she was growing up.

The long list of notable figures with whom the TRAINER TO THE STARS was connected includes “Broadway Joe” Namath . . . Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater . . . iconic actor James Stewart . . . lead singer Bono of the mega-group U2 . . . former Kentucky Gov. Brereton Jones . . . and New York City shock jock Howard Stern . . . as they, too, are among the many stars within John Parisella’s almost-unimaginable orbit. He was even befriended by John A. Gotti, son of the man called The Teflon Don, mob boss John J. Gotti.

John Parisella lived faster than his horses ran, burning through millions of dollars as a result of his generosity and profligate spending. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, he endured addictive behaviors associated with the condition—drug abuse and compulsive gambling. From the Streets of Brooklyn to Trainer to the Stars shares the whole story with never told behind-the-scenes conversations and dealings that helped make history.

Have a listen to Rick ad John this week- a lot of fun!

Bud Selig, ‘For the Good of the Game’

Former MLB Commissioner, Bud Selig, from a book signing in the Atlanta area, this week on “Tech of Sports.”

Bud Selig is the former ninth Commissioner of Baseball. A life-long baseball fan and long-term baseball executive, he’s known for contributions to America’s Pastime including reform of the economic structure of the game, as well as labor and drug-testing policies. Tenured for more than two decades, he lives with his wife, Sue, and they have three daughters.

In this clip, he talks about his unique relationship with the legendary, Bob Uecker.

Uecker, remains a Milwaukee Brewers radio broadcaster and he’s beloved by Brewers and baseball fans.

For more than a century, the game of baseball was resistant to change – owners, managers, players, fans all were against it. No one knew this better than Bud Selig, who, as the game’s ninth commissioner and the head of MLB for more than twenty years, brought about more change during his tenure than his eight predecessors combined. He ushered in some of the most important, and controversial, changes in the game’s history – modernizing a sport that that had remained virtually unchanged since the 1950s. In this enlightening and controversial book, Selig goes inside the most difficult decisions and moments of his career, looking at how he worked to balance baseball’s storied history with the pressures of the twenty-first century to ensure its future. Part baseball story part business saga, and part memoir, For the Good of the Game chronicles Selig’s career, takes fans inside locker rooms and board rooms, and offers an intimate, fascinating account of the process involved in transforming an American institution. Featuring an all-star lineup of the biggest names from the past forty years of baseball, Selig recalls the vital games, private moments, and tense conversations he’s shared with Hall of Fame players and managers and the contentious calls he’s made. He also speaks candidly about hot-button issues including the steroids scandal and the labor and economic issues that threatened to destroy the game.
