Isaac Alpert, The Pennysleever for Sports Collectors

The Pennysleever is a family business, founded by hobbyists, who believe that collectors would rather spend their money on their collection than their supplies. The motto says, we strive to offer top quality supplies at fair prices.

Rick talks with Isaac Alpert of The Pennysleever this week.

Whether you collect vintage or modern, rip wax or buy singles, we want to provide the products that keep your collection safe and looking great.

It’s now more important than ever for collectors to protect their collection.

Team Pennysleever is getting out into the world more, setting up at card shows around New York and New England. It has been a real thrill meeting Sleeveheads (yes, I am going to try and make that a thing) face to face! We’ve had a lot of really interesting conversations with collectors, and heard about what supplies you are looking for. We are taking notes, and expect some exciting announcements in the not-too-distant future.

Rene Nezhoda, Storage Wars, National Sports Collectors Convention

Rick talks with Rene Nezhoda on the floor of the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland.

Rene and Casey Nezhoda have been married for 16 years and are the owners of a 7,000 square foot shop called Bargain Hunters Thrift Store in San Diego, California.

One of the first things people notice about Rene is his accent, but the second is his buying prowess. With a big bankroll and an extensive knowledge of secondhand sales, Rene is a veteran buyer who doesn’t back down for anyone. Rene’s been buying and selling storage units since the age of 11 but when he’s not at the storage lockers, Rene loves to play poker and collect.

With hundreds of episodes of “Storage Wars” in the can, is Nezhoda an actor, reality show star or a TV villain?

“I’m a collector,” laughed Nezhoda before he took the stage at the Ebay booth to conduct what he now does most of his days, a card break. “I’ve been collecting for 30 years and I’m really getting out there now with getting on sites like Ebay.”

Rick and Rene talk about that and more.

Ophir Gaathon, Chief Executive Officer of DUST Identity and Sports Collectibles

Rick talks with Ophir Gaathon of Dust Identity.

Under the NCAA name, image and likeness (NIL) policy, among other benefits, college athletes are able to profit from signing autographs and essentially selling their jerseys and wares as collectibles. Having products of college athletes on the market in season ramps up excitement and growth of the industry. But the NIL also presents inherent challenges including the need for athletes to know which jerseys, helmets, and so on are theirs and which autographed wares are authentic and not knock-offs. For the individual athlete, there are not a lot of good options out there for authenticating their own products and protecting their investment.

At DUST Identity, the answer to this challenge is small — nanoparticle small. Using engineered diamond particles embedded in high-performance polymers, DUST gives physical “things” — products, parts, and packaging — an unclonable fingerprint to offer full tracking, indisputable authentication, tamper-free validation, and data transparency throughout the object’s entire lifecycle. Compared to existing identification methods, DUST is more cost efficient at less than $0.01 to apply at scale.

Ophir Gaathon – Chief Executive Officer

Ophir Gaathon is a supply chain security expert who has a deep understanding of the complex security challenges associated with global value chains. In his current role as CEO, he is responsible for the company’s overall vision and strategy, product commercialization, and overseeing technology and R&D initiatives. Prior to launching DUST Identity in 2018, Ophir was the CEO and founder of Diamond Nanotechnologies for seven years, where he developed the underlying technology for DUST with his cofounders. Prior to that, he was a Research Affiliate for the Synthetic Neurobiology Group in the MIT Media Lab for 3 years and served as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics’ Quantum Photonics Lab in 2013. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Columbia University and B.S. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. He has led research projects at MIT and Columbia, and he holds several patents.

Ken and Michael Richards of eSportsCards LLC

Rick is joined on this episode by Ken and Michael Richards of eSportsCards LLC.

Sports card collectors now have a new and techy way of organizing their collections with some bonus features thrown in.

eSportsCards, LLC. has created and released the “ScoutingReport” app and it is available on iOS and Android platforms.

⦁ google play –    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ScoutingReport
⦁ app store –    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/scouting-report/id1168035316

First step is downloading the ScoutingReport app.

ScoutingReport allows the user to manage their collection across multiple devices, using common sporting terms:

  • Roster – this is the users entered collection. Through the built in on-demand synchronizing functionality, your collection is backed up to the cloud and can be leveraged across multiple devices.
  • Lineups – just like a coach or manager, Lineups provide the ability to partition and segment your collection into teams, sport, rookie, memorabilia, graded and authenticated, etc. Creating lineups is limited to your imagination.

Collector’sArena

The ScoutingReport app also offers a “Collector’sArena”, a proprietary peer-to-peer trading/selling, marketplace. Collector’sArena is a 24/7 Card Show with available tables growing with each new member to the community.

Collector’sArena is simple to use:

  • Name your price when you list your cards.
  • No auction to monitor and worry about last second buy out.
  • Transaction fees are based on our in-app ticketing system. Tickets are less than $0.01 per card. For the remainder of 2020, ticketing fees have been waived.
  • All transactions require PayPal for peer-to-peer selling via ‘goods and services’ transactions ensures the transactions, eSportsCards is not a middleman like other buying/selling platforms.
  • Packaging options predetermined by the seller and chosen by the buyer.

How to get started:

ScoutingReport is currently listed for $4.99 in the app stores. Here’s the functionality that is included with the $4.99 download:

  • Create a User profile – without the profile user interaction is limited to viewing items in the Collector’sArena, i.e. Window Shopping.
  • Create, organize, store and backup your collection.
  • Access to buy/sell in the Collector’sArena.
  • Initial 100 tickets.

Two recent updates to the ScoutingReport app:

Child Accounts:
We have implemented a few securities that are offered in the form of ‘Child Accounts’. A Child Account will enable you to set your child up with their own account; however, there are limitations available to that account that you select: how much can they spend on a transaction without authorization from you; they cannot see any materials (think Billy Ripkens’ bat) that are flagged as ‘Adult Only’ when cards are uploaded to the Collector’s Arena marketplace.

Nomenclature:
Users are not required to utilize existing nomenclature for their card collection. A user can use their own verbiage for card set, card brand or sub set; i.e. green refractor Tom Brady.

Special Deal:

We are hobbyists looking to bring the hobby community back to a central location via the ScoutingReport App and the Collector’sArena. Through the remainder of 2020, we have suspended the ticketing system, only fees are for the PayPal transaction.

Michael Gross, Actor and Train Collector talks Tremors 6 and More

Going out of the world of sports a little this week, but couldn’t pass up the chance to talk to actor, Michael Gross. The longtime Hollywood actor is really one of the nice guys in Hollywood and he’s reprized his role in the new Tremors movie, and he’s wearing a Cubs hat.

We talk about the new movie, new technology in making movies and Michael’s love and obsession collecting everything trains and railroad.

Tremors: A Cold Day In Hell  is available on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, Digital and On Demand May 1st

⦁ Michael Gross reprises his iconic role as Burt Gummer along with Jamie Kennedy as Burt’s son Travis Welker

Tremors: A Cold Day In Hell  is the sixth installment in the popular cult-classic franchise

⦁ Includes never-before-seen bonus content including;
⦁ Footage of the making of the film
⦁ An up-close look at the very first underwater Graboid attack
⦁ The recreation of Chang’s Market
⦁ Commentary from the filmmakers

⦁ Tremors: The Complete Collection including all six movies will also be available on DVD May 1st

Film Synopsis:

Burt Gummer (Gross) and his son Travis Welker (Kennedy) find themselves up to their ears in Graboids and Ass-Blasters when they head to Canada to investigate a series of deadly giant worm attacks. Arriving at a remote research facility in the arctic tundra, Burt begins to suspect that Graboids are secretly being weaponized, but before he can prove his theory, he is sidelined by Graboid venom. With just 48 hours to live, the only hope is to create an antidote from fresh venom — but to do that, someone will have to figure out how to milk a Graboid!

Michael Gross, perhaps best known for his portrayal of father Steven Keaton on NBC’s award-winning Family Ties, has most recently been seen as River Baldwin in CBS’s daytime drama, The Young and the Restless.During his thirty-five year professional career, Michael has portrayed a remarkable range of characters, including recurring roles on both the Drew Cary Show, as well as on NBC’s acclaimed series, ER. He has appeared on the original Law & Order as well as its popular spin-offs, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Other appearances include The Outer Limits, Ally Macbeal, CSI: New York, How I Met Your Mother, Boston Legal, and Medium. He guest-starred with Family Ties veteran Michael J. Fox in Michael’s farewell episode of Spin City.

He married casting director Elza Bergeron in 1984. They have two children, Theodore and Katharine. Daughter Katie is the mother of Michael’s two grandchildren, Nicholas and Allison. Michael and his wife divide their time among homes in Southern California, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. His hobbies include reading, writing, yoga, thumbing through unremarkable screenplays, and devoting himself to an endless variety of obsessive-compulsive activities. As a grandson and great-grandson of railroaders, he is a life-long railroad fan, particularly of the former Santa Fe Railway. He is an amateur railway historian, photographer, and award-winning railroad modeler. He and Elza also collect Santa Fe dining car china, silver, and other memorabilia. One of their great joys is riding trains together, wherever they can find them; and, partly to ensure they will always have a train to ride, Michael and Elza are part owners of the Santa Fe Southern Railway, an eighteen-mile freight and passenger carrier headquartered in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

It was great talking to Michael.
