From the shoes we wear on our feet to the high definition televisions in our living room, wearable devices, the sports universe is a breeding ground for technology. Writer and Photographer Rick Limpert will examine this each week on The Tech of Sports – With guests which include athletes, inventors and journalists that cover the intersection of sports and technology.

David Marcus, EcoGrip

Rick is joined by David Marcus, the founder of EcoGrip this week.

Note: A biodegradable tennis / pickleball grip: a high performance grip for racket sports, which decomposes naturally within one year.

David had the idea for a biodegradable overgrip while traveling around eco-friendly Ireland in 2008. In 2010 I finally found a highly skilled industrial chemist in Australia and told him about my green idea. He joined our company. After several years of trial and error together our small team developed a great patent pending polymer for the overgrips. During the very hot summer of 2013 we play-tested EcoGRIP Smooth and Hi-Tac in 10 different countries with 30 excellent tennis coaches and players including a young teen player from California named Cici Bellis. No players were told the grips were eco-friendly. Every one of the players told us the grip played excellent, felt great and lasted longer than their current overgrips.* When we told them the grips would safely biodegrade in one year after changeout … they were blown away.

EcoGrip Hi–Tac overgrips use a slow-release formula and small perforations to offer much longer tack and superior sweat absorption.

Decomposes naturally in the environment within 1 year. Good for your game & great for the environment.

Makes a great holiday gift for a tennis/pickleball player.

Phil Southerland, Supersapiens Founder and CEO

Rick talks to Phil Southerland of Supersapiens, this week.

Supersapiens is a real-time energy management system for athletes powered by Abbott Libre Sense Glucose Sport Biosensor, empowering you with live data and insights around the key variable for athletic performance: Glucose.

Supersapiens is the brainchild of Founder and CEO, Phil Southerland. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at seven months old, doctors told his mother he would either be blind or dead by the age of 25. Despite the grim diagnosis, Phil didn’t just overcome the odds – he reimagined what was possible with diabetes and went on to achieve incredible success as a professional cyclist.

While this system is used by athletes of all backgrounds, it is especially crucial for athletes competing with diabetes. With November being National Diabetes Awareness Month, I thought this would be the perfect time to share Phil’s story.

Phil Southerland is a global ambassador for diabetes and is committed to educating and empowering the 1.2 billion people across the globe associated with the condition. He is the CEO and co-founder of Team Novo Nordisk, the first all-diabetic cycling team and CEO and founder of Supersapiens, a groundbreaking continuous glucose monitoring ecosystem that allows athletes to gain insights into how glucose and fuel impact their bodies in real time.

Kevin Silberman, High School Coach and Teacher, TikTok and Instagram Star

With over 1.2 million TikTok followers and over 52 million likes on TikTok, you should know who Kevin Silberman is… because your kids probably do.

Silberman may seem like the typical high school teacher and track coach in Minnesota, but not really.

Silberman has “blown up” on social media! What started out as a cute way to engage and encourage his students has grown into a full-time hobby for Silberman.

Silberman is funny, topical and uses a dry humor and “plays on words” to generate weird looks and laughs.

From filming with his students (with permission) to his “man on the street” interviews. Once you start watching these short videos, you can’t stop.

Here’s an interview with Silberman.

Enjoy… a guy with 52 million TikTok likes has to be interesting and check out his head of hair! … “thank you very much!”
